Saugerties Youth Hockey Association was established in 1999, and is a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing youth hockey opportunities. SYHA's goal is to provide cost effective opportunities for Saugerties and surrounding area youth, regardless of race, color, creed or sex, to compete at all levels of youth hockey.
SYHA is affiliated with USA Hockey, and follows the American Development Model (ADM) for its younger players. SYHA and Mustang coaches follow a registration and education certification program implemented by the USA Hockey program.
The Saugerties Mustangs program is the travel program for SYHA, and competes in leagues in New York.
The Saugerties Mustangs are part of New York State Amateur Hockey Association (NYSAHA) for its State and National championship aspirations.
Player Development is the main focus in SYHA and Mustang and Fillies programs, and every practice throughout all levels focuses heavily on skill development.
Player programs provide an avenue for all player performance levels and development phases. SYHA offers beginning skaters a good foundation with its Learn to Skate/Play Hockey, Mite, Squirt and Peewee In-house development programs. From these introductory and development programs, players can evolve into more challenging programs offered by the Saugerties Mustangs' Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam and Midget Programs. Our current program offerings are available on the website's top menu under the 'Travel' section. Additionally we now offer our Fillies programs for Girls Hockey from six to eighteen years old.
SYHA and The Saugerties Mustangs through an agreement with the Town of Saugerties (Parks and Recreation Department) is the main tenant of the Kiwanis Ice Arena.
The Kiwanis Ice Arena has a skating surface of 195’ by 85’, seating capacity for 800 patrons, and four changing rooms.
SYHA manages both practice and game times, the days of 6 AM ice time and random schedules has been replaced with fixed practice days and reasonable practice times.
SYHA is governed by a set of By-Laws and Policies and managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. As a true 503.C Non-profit entity, SYHA spends all of its capital on Hockey. And as a volunteer coached and managed entity, costs are kept low, and youth hockey is the only focus.
SYHA does run various fundraising events to support equipment, facility, community support, scholarship and capital improvement initiatives. These activities include a Golf Scramble, Raffles, Donut sales, Apparel sales, and silent auctions.
