Coaches Registration

Coaching Requirements

Updated: May 27, 2020  July 9, 2020

There are changes to the coaching requirements for the 2020-21 season.

Head Coaches:  You are responsible to ensure all of your coaches are current/certified for the age group you are coaching this season.

Steps 1-5 must be completed before the start of the 2020-21 season

1) USA Hockey Registration – Completed each season.  Click here to go to the USA Hockey Registration website.

$54 total for USA Hockey ($46) and NYSAHA ($8) fees.  Fee is reimbursable through SYHA.
2) Saugerties Youth Hockey Association Coach Registration.  Use the link at our home page to register as a coach with SYHA.
3) Background Screen – This process/vendor has changed for the 2020-21 season.

For members who were last screened through their Affiliate after April 1, 2019, for the 2019-20 season, their screens will be valid for the 2020-21 season, and will not need to be screened under the new system until prior to the 2021-22 season. If a member’s most recent screen is from prior to April 1, 2019, the member, if in a position that requires a background screen, will need to be screened under the new system in order to participate in the upcoming 2020-21 season.

All new screens submitted through the new NCSI national screening program after April 1, 2020, will be valid for two seasons. For example, a screen submitted and approved on April 15, 2020, will be valid through the end of the 2021-22 season, which is August 31, 2022.

$30 fee is reimbursable.
4) USA Hockey SafeSport Program Online Training/Education – Please note, if you are a 2003 birth year or earlier, you will be required to take the SafeSport Core Training or Refresher Course prior to participation for the 2020-21 season.
The SafeSport Training and Refresher Training are each valid for one (1) season beginning on 4/1/20.
5) USA Hockey Online Age-Specific Modules - Accessed at the following link
In June 2010, USA Hockey's Board of Directors passed legislation making the online age-specific modules a requirement for all coaches. Each coach is required to complete the module that corresponds to the age level of play he or she is currently coaching. Modules need to be completed only once per age level, as they do not expire.
6) Coaching Clinics - USA Hockey Coaching Education Program (CEP) virtual clinics are being added periodically.  You will need to be registered with USA Hockey as a coach for the 2020-21 season to register for a virtual CEP clinic.
A temporary card is available through USA Hockey through July 31, 2020.  Go to this website to learn more:
Keep in mind that Age Specific Modules and the Level 3 Recertification are online and available now at

If you have questions or need to submit certificates or receipts verifying completion email SYHA Ace Coordinator Doug Little at
